The St. Mary Outdoor Education Program is a unique opportunity for St. Mary students to connect with their Creator through His creation, the great outdoors. After attending a three-day training session at Pioneer Camp in Port Sydney, where the students experienced canoeing, hiking, high ropes, low ropes, and bonding by the campfire, our St. Mary Outdoor Education leaders were prepared to lead DCDSB elementary school students through their Outdoor Education Adventure Day at Camp Samac in Oshawa.
During the Outdoor Education Adventure Days, elementary students celebrate a liturgy as a reminder that our Faith teaches us to be stewards of the Earth. St. Mary Outdoor Ed leaders, then, guide the elementary students through various activities including shelter building, hiking, orienteering with compasses, cooperative games, roasting marshmallows around the campfire, and Aboriginal art and storytelling.
The St. Mary Outdoor Education program helps St. Mary students to develop valuable leadership and teambuilding skills, but more importantly, an appreciation for the great outdoors.
