DCDSB Students Participate in Carea Community Health Centre’s Walk to Honour MMIWG2S
On May 5, students and an educator from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering joined Oshawa's Carea Community Health Centre by participating in a walk to honour Murdered and Missing Indigenous Peoples (MMIP).
While there, students were fortunate to listen to Indigenous speakers, witness ceremony, and participate in the tribute to MMIP. With red dresses on display, Liz Akiwinzie, an Elder shared her story and historical knowledge, Sarah Lewis provided a spoken word piece that paid tribute to those lost due to acts of violence, and Liz Osawamick sang a traditional song.
Students, along with others at the gathering, were invited to drum and to contribute to the sacred fire which was cared for by Fire Keeper, Timothy Smoke, prior to the walk around the facilities.
