Posted On Wednesday May 31, 2023

The afternoon of Friday, May 26, 2023 was incredible in terms of the beautiful sunny skies, the cool breeze in the air, along with the competitive intensity for the title of Senior Girls Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) Soccer Championship.  The match was held at the South Courtice Arena, in Courtice, Ontario.

The championship match hosted the Senior Girls teams from both St. Mary Catholic Secondary School (Pickering), and Donald A. Wilson Secondary School (Whitby), and kick off began at 12:00pm.  Mario Iozzi was the Head Official for the match and did an incredible job with his Assistant Officials for the match.

From the kickoff, the St. Mary Monarch’s controlled much of the first half in the both the neutral zone and the defending zone of Donald A. Wilson. Both teams were in good form on the well-manicured, turf field at South Courtice Arena, and there were many spectators at the match.  During the first half, St. Mary controlled much of the possession play, and pocketed a goal at the 35th minute, coming from Isabella L. (Grade 12).

With incredible intensity from both sides, St. Mary CSS kept the pressure on, but also, incredibly defended the offensive attempts from Donald A. Wilson, and ultimately, came out as the 2023 LOSSA Senior Girls Soccer Champions, with St. Mary goalkeeper, Tavia R. (Grade 12), holding a clean sheet for a 1-0 result.

Head Coach, Christopher Gerosavas added “Our team has had an incredible season so far, with no goals conceded during all playoff rounds, scoring 8 goals in total over the 3 playoff round matches.  Our team has been producing goals from all lines on the field throughout the season and playoffs, and we have a formidable defensive game too.”

St. Mary Senior Girls Soccer scored over 30 goals this season across all matches played, and conceded 4 in a single game. With a record of 7-1-0, the St. Mary Monarch’s will be representing LOSSA at the upcoming Ontario Federation of School Athletics Associations (OFSAA) on June 8 – 10 in Grimsby, Ontario. “This is the largest competition of soccer in the province for secondary school athletics, and while the competition will be incredible, we are preparing over the next 10 days, readying our athletes to be both head strong and physically ready for the elevated competition.  Achieving an OFSAA invitation for these ladies culminates an incredible achievement for each of them over their high school career, and with the opportunity to represent LOSSA at the provincials is redoubtably, the pinnacle of competition for our athletes.  We are excited!  We are ready!  We are going in to win it all!
