Students Weld Reindeer Sculptures at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School

St. Mary Catholic Secondary School's Manufacturing Engineering Technology course had students connect skilled trades experience with manufacturing fundamentals. A recent class project inspired by Technology teacher, Mr. Sorbilli, had students Maira and Jack create reindeer for the school.

Students used a photo as a reference, and using rebar from the shop container, measured pieces, sanded the edges, used a torch to heat the rebar to bend the neck section and then used their mig-welding skills to weld the pieces together to make the reindeer frame. The welds were then grinded down to make an esthetic finish and painted. The students also had fun decorating the reindeer and added a red-light Rudolph nose.

This reindeer project involved numeracy, problem-solving and skilled trades experience to create a beautiful sculpture that is on display in the main office. Maira and Jack are making smaller versions of the reindeers as well.

Additional students in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology course are also creating final projects including a hovercraft, radio speaker, wiring new interior gauges for vehicle, and building a mini battery car.

As a Canadian Welding Bureau certified school, St. Mary students are leaders in skilled trades through opportunities to work in the auto and construction shops with certified technology teachers.
