Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) is a program designed to assist newly arrived students to become familiar with the Canadian school system and make some friends before the start of school in September.

For many newcomer students, high school in Ontario is very different from their previous school and the first few months can be stressful. The NOW program promises to give these students “better starts” in their new schools by orienting them to the people and activities that can help them settle in their new school.

A key feature of the NOW program is the role of Peer Leaders, high school students who are trained to run the program with the support of teachers and school settlement workers. Many of the Peer Leaders were themselves newcomers in previous years.

The 3-day NOW program provides an interesting and fun curriculum. Through interactive activities such as scavenger hunts, skits, and games newcomer students are oriented in a supportive, fun environment.

Location: Donald A. Wilson Secondary School, 681 Rossland Road West, Whitby
Dates: August 27 - 29, 2018
Time: 8:30 am – 1:30 pm

To register your student for the NOW program, please complete all of the forms in the reigstration package and return them to your School Settlement Worker.
