Centennial College Female Trades Event
On Wednesday, February 22nd, select St. Mary students attended Centennial College's Durham Region Trades event with a female-focus.
Students listened to guest speakers share their own skilled trades experience, had opportunities to learn about skilled trades programs available at the college and complete some hands-on activities including building a small electrical grid, lifting a tractor trailer truck, weld virtually, operate some heavy equipment and examine the components of a natural gas furnace.
Students were encouraged to explore a skilled trades pathway in secondary school through OYAP which is a cooperative education experience in a skilled trade placement, tech courses and SHSM. Centennial College also highlighted the career opportunities available in the skilled trades.
"Wonderful guest speakers showcasing their trades pathway" - Elisa, grade 12 student
"I really liked virtual welding as it gave me the experience of welding in a safe learning environment. Using the equipment and learning the hydraulics was cool to experience, especially seeing what I can learn when I get into a college trades program." - Mara, grade 12 student
