Together for Mental Health: Everyone, Everyday

Developing positive mental health is important to academic achievement and overall well-being.

We can’t always avoid challenges, but learning how to solve a problem is a skill that will be helpful throughout your life.  One way to address a problem is through a strategy called STOP, THINK and GO. The next time you face a problem, STOP and identify what the problem is. Then, THINK about different solutions for the problem and what might happen if you tried each solution. Finally, GO and try out the solution you think is best. It might sound simple, but slowing down and thinking through problems, makes facing them a little easier.

Helping your teen develop problem-solving skills is crucial for their growth and independence as we cannot avoid challenges in life. As with all conversations with your child, start by encouraging open communication, creating a safe space for them to express their thoughts and feelings where you are listening actively without judgment.

Be explicit in teaching them the steps of problem-solving:

  • Identifying the problem
  • Brainstorming solutions
  • Evaluating options
  • Choosing the best solution and taking action
  • Reviewing the outcome

It is important for you to foster their independence by encouraging them to take responsibility for their decisions, offering guidance but allowing them to make their own choices and learn from mistakes. Your support and guidance can empower your teen to become a confident and effective problem solver.
