DCDSB Let’s Talk Day
A big reason people don't seek help for mental health issues is because of stigma. What is stigma? Stigma is a hurtful judgment that leads to someone being excluded or seen as different from others. People can experience stigma based on characteristics that make them unique, and there can be a lot of stigma around mental health. At DCDSB one of the ways we are trying to help alleviate the stigma is by making sure that you know that it's okay to ask for help for your mental health, just like you would seek help for your physical health. Let’s stomp out the stigma around mental health! Tomorrow is DCDSB Let’s Talk Day, a day focusing on our health and well-being and talking about where to get help if you need it!
Parent/Guardian/Caregiver Information
Tomorrow is DCDSB Let’s Talk Day, a day to start conversations and dispel stigma around mental health in order to ensure that all our students, staff and parents/families/caregivers feel comfortable and know how to seek help when needed.
The biggest factor in why people don't seek help for mental health concerns is stigma. Due to the negative beliefs around mental health, people can be afraid to reach out for help due to fears of judgement. Here at DCDSB we are trying to help alleviate the stigma around mental health, to ensure that kids know that it's okay to ask for help, just like they would seek help for a physical problem. It's important that we create and foster a supportive environment both at home and at school; an environment that encourages positive mental health and normalizes conversations about our feelings and well-being. Even just starting a conversation about feelings and how things may be going for your child is a great way to show that you care about their mental health and lets them know that you are there for them when they need you.
