Alliance For Compassion: Shoebox Campaign
St Mary's Alliance for Compassion ran a very successful Shoebox Campaign. For the second year in a row, the campaign provided Covenant House with "care packages" for homeless youth. Students learned about Toronto's homeless youth population and that many are from the LGBTQ+ community. The reason is, this demographic often find themselves without caring, loving support. Our students turned their compassion into action!
A part of the project was to brainstorm items that homeless youth could use in the coming months. Items included: lip balm, lotion, feminine hygiene products, Kleenex, flossers, toothpaste, toothbrushes, gum, socks, hats, mitts, scarves, toys such as fidget spinners or rubics cubes, books. Homerooms, with teacher guidance, brought in shoeboxes and filled at least one shoebox full of these items! We also received donations from dentistry offices and a shoe store.
The final stage of this campaign is to sort, package and set up delivery of the care packages to Covenant House. With teacher support, students ensured this project's success as well as spreading awareness to their peers. We are looking forward to another successful initiative next year!!
