St. Mary Catholic Secondary School has been offering evening introduction to welding and automotive service for students throughout this school year. The programs provide opportunities to expose students and parents, in an experiential learning format, to the apprenticeship pathway.

This month, St. Mary Catholic Secondary School technology teacher, Mr. Sorbilli, welcomedGrade 8 students to gain hands-on experience with an introduction to basic automotive servicing. Students and their accompanying parent/guardian learned how to conduct oil changes, rotate tires, inspect brakes and test a battery on their family vehicles.

Essential skills like problem-solving, safe work procedures and enhancing numeracy are also promoted through the hands-on learning opportunities provided during the evening sessions.

These Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Expansion programs are designed to reach students in Grades 7-10 and highlight the apprenticeship pathway. The goal is to encourage students to consider taking a Technological Education course, explore the skilled trades pathway, and perhaps participate in SHSM and/or the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) in high school.
