Durham Catholic "Return to Learning" is the primary resource for information regarding the 2020-2021 school year. More detailed information regarding learning formats, Health and Safety protocols, Transportation, Communication to Parents/Guardians from the Ministry of Education and DCDSB are available at Durham Catholic Return to Learning.

In-person hybrid model 

  • Classes will include both in-class "face to face" in the mornings and online virtual learning in the afternoons
  • Quadmester system: Instead of the usual semester system (4 courses daily from September to January, and 4 courses daily from February to June), 2020-2021 schedule will be 2 courses from September 14 to November 12, 2 courses from November 16 to January 29, 2 courses from February to mid-April, 2 courses from mid-April to June). Each quadmester is approximately 45 days long. 
  • Daily schedule Adapted Model
    • 10:00 am - 12:30 pm: In School Instruction based on Cohort Schedule (see calendar below)
    • 12:30 - 2:00 pm: Dismissal/Travel Time/Lunch
    • 2:00 - 3:15 pm: Synchronous Online Learning
    • 3:15 - 4:30 pm: Online Academic Assistance

For example, in a 4 week cycle, students attend in-person as follows

Week 1
Student in Cohort A attends PERIOD 1 class in person on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:00-12:30 (indicated by 1-A on the calendar above)
Student attends PERIOD 2 full class online synchronous learning every afternoon Monday-Friday from 2:00 - 3:15

Week 2
Student in Cohort A attends PERIOD 2 class in person on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:00-12:30 (indicated by 2-A on the calendar above)
Student attends PERIOD 1 full class online synchronous learning every afternoon Monday-Friday from 2:00 - 3:15

Online virtual learning (DCVSS)

  • Students who do not return to St. Mary for in-class learning will be placed in Durham Catholic Virtual Secondary School (DCVSS). Students will be in classes with other students the same grade from across the system who have decided on the online learning model. They may have limited or no contact with their home school, classmates, and teacher as these classes will be formed based on grade, not geographical location.
  • Secondary students participating in the online learning model will have to re-select some of their courses from the complement that is available which may not be the full a range of elective courses that is traditionally available
  • Any requests for changes from in-class or remote learning models must be made by contacting Principal Mrs. Duane at StMaryCSS@dcdsb.ca. Change requests will be recorded by administration for consideration after September 21, 2020 for the next quadmester.  Where space and class size allows, requests may be accommodated.

  • Technical Support: If you require technical support on Board issued devices or applications such as Edsby, D2L/Brightspace, Office 365, etc., please email TechnologySupport@dcdsb.ca and explain the issue you are experiencing such as password reset. Please include in the email, the student name, student User ID, date of birth, school name, grade and phone number where we can contact you.

Minimum technical requirements for online learning:

  • Internet access
  • A microphone and speaker on the device such as computer/laptop, iPad, Chromebook
  • A webcam would be helpful, but not required. Usually laptops, Chromebooks and iPads has a camera built-in
  • A camera may be required to submit school work depending on the program you are taking.
  • Google Chrome browser preferable. Google Chrome browser would be used to connect to Office 365, Edsby, D2L/Brightspace
  • Your teacher will let you know any other requirements
